Japanese and Jordanian women NGO leaders witness the twentieth woman dialogue program between the two countries

Quick glance at the project

The General Federation of Jordanian Women (GFJW) hosted a dialogue between Japanese and Jordanian woman NGOs’ leaders at its headquarters in Amman on Thursday, 25 October, which marked the twentieth anniversary since its start in January 1995. Three Japanese participants who arrived Jordan Wednesday as the final leg of their tour to the Middle East including Egypt and Palestine, made presentations under the theme of “Adult and Community Education for Women”.

This women’s exchange program between Japan and Jordan was initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal when the Princess visited Japan in October 1993 in order to broaden the existing friendly relationship between the two countries. Her Royal Highness’s farseeing vision bore fruit in 1996 where the first delegation of female leaders of the Jordanian society visited Japan and had a dialogue with Japanese NGOs. Since then, twenty nine Jordanian women in total visited Japan under the program to provide the Japanese people with the better understanding of Jordan and its challenges, in Tokyo and as well as various local cities in Japan. Meanwhile ten delegations from Japan which consist of leaders and activists of NGOs working for women visited Jordan. The successful exchange to deepen the mutual understanding has expanded to Palestine and Egypt later.

The Japanese delegation this year consists of YWCA Japan members, namely Professor Mayako Ishii President of YWCA of Japan, Professor Mihoko Ejiri Chairperson of the Japanese Women’s Committee of the UN NGOs, and Ms. Mari Sasabe Board Member of YWCA Osaka. Highlighting the importance of the role that women have played, they introduced at the dialogue a historical review, general situation, and case studies of the adult and community education for women in Japan.

Earlier than it, the delegation along with members of the GFJW paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Suleiman Tarawneh, Minister for Social Development, at his office in the morning of 25 October. It visited a project site in Jerash on 24 October at which the GFJW has implemented some projects with local women. The delegation members also had meeting with the Ambassador of Japan to Jordan and YWCA Jordan.

Next program is slated to take place in Japan in January 2008 where the Jordanian participant will make a presentation under the same theme of the dialogue took place in Amman Thursday.
