SYNOPSIS

After transferring to the same elementary school, Takaki and Akari became best friends. But when both families are forced to relocate, their lives change. After a year of separation, Takaki is about to reunite with Akari. Sitting on the train from Tokyo, memories of the past rush through his mind as he draws closer to his meeting, Takaki and Akari begin to wonder if the will ever be able to see each other again, and share their secret feelings. Join Takaki on a journey into three interconnected tales of love and lost innocence that span the minutes and months of their lives.

The title of the film, 5 Centimeters per Second, refers to the speed at which cherry blossoms fall from the trees, reminiscent of the slowness of life and how people often start together but slowly drift into their separate ways.


OVERVIEW

"Byousoku 5 Centimeters (5 Centimeters per Second)" is the serial short animations consisting of independent three works, which story is depicted with a boy at the core. Its story is set on Japan from the first half of the 1990s to now. Its place moves around Tokyo and some other countryside along with the boy's life.

Unlike the past works of Makoto Shinkai… There will be no fantasy or Sci-fiction elements in this film. Shinkai attempts to present the true real world as he did actual location hunting. Shinkai’s objective for creating this film is to create works that inspire ones life ”by depicting life as true as it is and let the viewers have a different view to the familiar surroundings that everyone has seen before.” Because “even though our real lives are tainted by sad and dramatic event, the world still brighten our lives with beauty and colourful events that makes everything worth living ….”

- The film has been released theatrically from March 3rd and extended its showing for over 35 theaters till beginning of August, 2007.
- The film has selected as the Opening Film for Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival 2007
- Outside of Japan, the film has been released theatrically in Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong (as of September 2007.)
