The second Japan Week at the University of Jordan


Day 1: Opening ceremony and cultural programs



The faculty of Arts of the University of Jordan, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Jordan Office and the Embassy of Japan jointly organized the Second Japan Week at the university, which aimed to introduce various aspects of Japanese culture to Jordanian students though its four-day event.

The opening of this cultural event took place on 27 February at Language Center of the university under the patronage of H.E. Professor Khalid Al Karaki, President of the University of Jordan. Professor Eid Dirani, Vice President, presided at it on behalf of the President and it was also attended by H.E. Mr. Shigenobu Kato, the Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, Mr. Takeaki Sato, Resident Representative of (JICA) Jordan Office, and the university deans, professor and students.

Introducing a Japanese literary work which this year marks millenary of its first appearance in history, has been read at a few courses of Professor Ahmad Majdoubeh, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, the Japanese Ambassador mentioned in his speech at the opening ceremony that he admired the great diversity of letters and language that the power of such a literary work which has extended over years as well as geographical borders. He hailed Jordanian students as all gifted particularly in study of languages and expected greatly for their future.

Following the opening, screening of a video clip, an introductory lecture of the Japanese language, martial arts' performance, dances and music concert fascinated audience. Interactive open booth day was organized on the second day of the event, on 28 February, in order to provide Jordanian students with an opportunity to touch, practice and feel various aspects of culture of Japan, namely, “origami” art of folding paper, “kirie” art of cutting paper, traditional toys, calligraphy, and traditional clothing. The Japanese Speech Contest and screening of three Japanese movies including animation were organized within activities of the Japan Week on 1 March and 2 March respectively.

Having shared the belief that the development of human resources is the key to national wellbeing, Japan and Jordan have worked together to evolve higher education at Jordanian universities. The Language Center which was the venue of the Japan Week is equipped with the latest language laboratories that Japan donated under the Cultural Grant Program. In addition to the provision of equipment, the two friendly countries have strengthened their partnership in the intellectual dialogue and exchange program.
