Remarks in August 2006
Read on behalf of Mr. Shigenobu Kato, Ambassador of Japan, on August 6, 2006 on the occasion of
Hiroshima Week in Jordan 2006 at the Technological Engineering College of Al
Balqa Applied University
Today, August 6, 2006, marks a truly sad day for human kind. Sixty one years ago an atomic bomb exploded over the Japanese city Hiroshima. Three days later another atomic bomb fell on Nagasaki. More than 200,000 people died in the immediate aftermath of those bombings. These tragedies signaled the beginning of the Nuclear Age, which continues to threaten the survival of human kind.
Not only is what happened important, but so is what we should do for the future. Nuclear weapons are the culmination of the spiral of violence. Therefore, the vicious circles of violence and revenge must be interrupted if humanity aspires to live in peace and harmony.
Since the end of the World War II, Japan has committed itself to its constitution as providing; "Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and other, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes." Japan has been devoting itself to achieve peace.
The world must never use any weapon of mass destruction again. It must not repeat the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is the sincere message of the Japanese Government and its people; Let us make peace, not war.
