Representing the Jordanian women, Ms. Haifa Karadsheh, Executive member of the General Federation of Jordanian Women and Head of its Madaba branch, participated in two symposia under the theme of “Women's Participation in Economy and Women's Contribution to Society: Women in Arabic Countries Now, and in Japan?”. The events were held on 4 February in Tokyo and on 8 February in Nagasaki respectively. She presented about women’s economic activity in Jordan, which provided the Japanese audience with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Jordanian society.
The visit was arranged by the Embassy of Japan in Jordan within the framework of the women’s exchange program between Japan and Jordan, which has been continued since it was initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal when the Princess visited Japan in October 1993 in order to broaden the existing friendly relationship between Japan and Jordan. Her Royal Highness’s farseeing vision bore fruit in 1996 where the first delegation of female leaders of the Jordanian society visited Japan and had a discussion with Japanese NGOs. The recent program in Japan marked the 19th exchange following the successful visit of the Japanese delegation to Jordan in November 2006.
The symposium in Tokyo was attended by about 200 audiences with the presence of H.E. Mr. Samir Nouri, the Jordanian Ambassador to Japan, Mrs. Ryoko Akamatsu, ex-Minister of Education of Japan and officials from the government of Japan. Ms. Haifa had a number of calls and visits within Japan, namely the Senior Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, woman parliament members, senior officials of the government concerned with women issues, and business women, in addition to woman NGOs as her counterpart.
She will wrap up her 8-day visit to Japan on 10 February and return to Amman on 11 February.
