Japan Week at the University of Jordan

Quick glance at the project

The faculty of Arts of the University of Jordan and the Embassy of Japan jointly organized “Japan Week” at the university, which aimed to introduce various aspects of Japanese culture to Jordanian students. The opening of this cultural event took place on 12 December at Language Center of the university under the patronage of H.E. Professor Abdelrahim Hunaiti, President of the University of Jordan. The ceremony was also attended by H.E. Mr. Shigenobu Kato, the Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, Mr. Takeaki Sato, Resident Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Jordan Office, and the university staff and students.

Having shared the belief that the development of human resources is the key to national wellbeing, Japan and Jordan have worked together to evolve higher education at Jordanian universities. The Language Center which was the venue of the Japan Week is equipped with the latest language laboratories that Japan donated under the Cultural Grant Program. The laboratories have contributed to English and French language education for Jordanian students. In addition to the provision of equipment, the two friendly countries have strengthened their partnership in the intellectual dialogue and exchange program. The Japanese language course commenced in 1993 has steadily developed with some enthusiastic Jordanian students and now grants scholarships to students who got excellent marks. A student from among those is now pursuing a master course in teaching Japanese this semester in 2006. JICA dispatches three Japanese language teachers to the Department of Modern Languages in the Faculty of Arts.

As for the Jordanian side, Dr. Ahmad Majdoubeh, Professor of English and Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Jordan, teaches works of a number of Japanese authors in English.

Despite Japan’s rich culture, few of its aspects are only known to Jordanians. The Japan Week introduced many of them, namely, Japanese language, Judo, music, and food on 12 December, and showed movie, origami art of folding paper, and calligraphy on 13 December.
