Japanese and Jordanian women exchanged views and share knowledge under the theme of “Women's participation in the economic activity: Current situation and perspective” in the morning of Saturday, 18 November, at the headquarters of the General Federation of Jordanian Women.
The women’s exchange program between Japan and Jordan marked the 18th exchange since it was initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal when the Princess visited Japan in October 1993 in order to broaden the existing friendly relationship between Japan and Jordan. Her Royal Highness’s farseeing vision bore fruit in 1996 where the first delegation of female leaders of the Jordanian society visited Japan and had a discussion with Japanese NGOs. The successful exchange to deepen the mutual understanding has expanded to Palestine and Egypt later. Next program will take place in Japan in February 2007 where the Jordanian participant will make a presentation under the same theme of the 18th exchange.
Mrs. Masako Hiramatsu, head of the delegation, made a presentation about women’s participation in the economic activities introducing some cases in Japan. Talking challenges that women face in the scientific fields, Dr. Nobuko Kurosaki, President of BPW Japan, focused on Japanese female medical doctors. The presentations were concluded by Ms. Hiromi Fujita who showed the perception gap between men and women in Japan.
In conclusion of the dialogue, Mrs. Hiramatsu who visited Jordan several times under the program, proposed a new network among NGOs of Japan and the Middle East to share useful information and it was welcomed by the Jordanian female NGO leaders.
The Japanese delegation visited the Ministry of Labor to exchange views on Saturday, too. They are to call on the Jordanian National Commission for Women and H.E. Dr. Suleiman Tarawneh, Minister for Social Development on 19 November. Discussion with university female students is also arranged on 19 November. The General Federation of Jordanian Women (GFJW) has been a responsible organization to arrange the program.
