Completion of Taji Gas Turbine Power Station Rehabilitation Project

Japan’s direct grant  project  for Republic of Iraq

Japan’s Grant Aid Project to rehabilitate Taji Gas Power Station has finished this month; and the certificate of completion of the project for its implementing company was signed by the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq and its consultant on Monday, December 17th, 2007 in Amman, in the presence of representative of Embassy of Japan to Jordan.

The Taji Gas Power Station, which is located 20km northwest of Baghdad, is one of the nearest electricity power stations to the republic capital. Three overage units of gas turbine and generator of the station (unit No.2, 3, and 5) were replaced by brand-new ones. With this completion of the project, the station revives 75MW maximum generation capacity, which is equivalent to supply electricity 24 hours for about 37,500 households, or 190,000 - 230,000 people.

The new gas turbine units are dual-mode turbines, eligible to operate with either natural gas or fuel oil upon user’s convenience. This specification of the units enables the Ministry to rely on oil fuel to operate the power station under the current disabled situation of a gas pipeline between Kirkuk and Taji, which was sabotaged in 2006.

The Government of Japan, at the same time, is implementing rehabilitation project of other three units of Taji Gas Power Station (unit No. 1, 4, and 6) through United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UNDP project is scheduled to complete by June 2008. If both projects are completed and the gas pipeline fueling is revived, the power station will revive its 150MW maximum power generation capacity in total.
