The Japanese Government provided Jordan with a grant in the value of JD16 million to finance the “Developing of Jordan’s Civil Defense Appliances” project. This grant amount is drawn from the Japan-Jordan Counterpart Fund. The Fund was established through the deposits generated from the sales of commodities, which were procured through the Japanese Non-Project Grant Aid, to be utilized for economic and social development purposes in Jordan.
Minister Al-Ali noted that the Japanese assistance will help provide the General Directorate of Civil Defense with the necessary equipment and vehicles in order to deal with natural disasters, severe weather conditions, fires, as well as other unprecedented accidents. Supplying the Directorate General of Civil Defense with the needed equipment and resources will not only develop the Directorate’s capabilities in enhancing its service delivery, but will also significantly improve civilians’ safety and well being. Minister Al-Ali also noted that the Governorates that will be covered under this project are Amman, Zarqa, Madaba, and Balqaa, in addition to the newly established Rescue and Support Directorate in the southern region.
Moreover, Minister Al-Ali expressed the Government of Jordan’s appreciation for the Government and the people of Japan for this grant and for their continued support to Jordan throughout its development process, which has enabled Jordan to sustain its reform momentum and achieve a favorable performance in many socio-economic spheres. In this context, Minister Al-Ali noted that Japan previously provided Jordan with two grants for an amount of US$15 million to upgrade the civil defense appliances.
On the other hand, H.E. Ambassador Shigenobu Kato, Ambassador of Japan in Jordan, referred to the exceptional relations that Japan and Jordan enjoy. Ambassador Kato also noted that this grant will help the General Directorate of Civil Defense to better address the challenges of protecting Jordanian citizens and reducing damages that may result from accidents, fires, and natural disasters.
It is worth noting that Japan, since the year 1999, provided Jordan with assistance in the value of US$321 million, of which US$60 million as a loan, in addition to the technical assistance program that is managed by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
