Notes to this effect was exchanged in Amman on September 10 2006, between H.E. Mr. Shigenobu Kato, Ambassador of Japan and H.E. Mrs. Suhair Al-Ali, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation.

Prime Minister of Japan H.E. Mr. Junichiro Koizumi had announced his government’s decision to extend a Non-Project Grant Aid to Jordan during talks with H.E. Dr. Marouf Al Bakhit last July in Aqaba. The Grant is due to be utilized for importing basic commodities critically needed for achieving the economic structural adjustment and mitigating the economic difficulties of Jordan.

Since 1995, nine Non-Project Grant Aids have been extended to Jordan with a total amount of Twenty-Four billion Japanese Yen (\24,000,000,000), approximately One Hundred Fifty million JD (150,000,000JD). During the past few years, the Government of Jordan has used the Non-Project grant aids to purchase a number of commodities including barley, ammonia, construction machinery, wheat, and oil for alleviating the financial situation in Jordan. These commodities have certainly assisted the Government of Jordan in pursuing its social and economic reforms, as well as maintaining fiscal and monetary stability.

In addition to the above mentioned Non-Project Grant Aid, the proceeds of the grants have supported the economic and social development projects in Jordan in fields such as education, vocational training, agriculture, water, environment, and industrial promotion, according to the Jordanian Government’s development policy. Till this day, approximately One Hundred million JD (100,000,000JD) have been allocated for these projects in order to contribute to the better standard of living for the Jordanian people and sustainable development of Jordan.

The Government of Japan believes that Jordan is a key country to realize the peace in the Middle East Region, and hopes strongly that sustainable stability has been fostered in Jordan. Japan is pleased to work along with the Government of Jordan on possible future, all with a view of strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual cooperation which exist between the two countries.
