Quick glance at the project

Japan and Jordan held the ground-breaking ceremony for the project of improving the water supply networks in the North and Middle districts of the Jordan Valley at the project site in Tabaqat Fahil on May 18, 2006. The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Eng. Mohamad Thafer Al-Alem, Minister of Water and Irrigation; His Excellency Mr. Shigenobu Kato, Ambassador of Japan to Jordan; officials from the Government of Jordan; and staffs from Japanese consultant and construction companies.

This Grant Aid project of Japan is worth Two Billion and Eleven Million Yen (2,011,000,000), approximately Twelve Million JD (12,000,000JD), and aims at improving current water supply conditions in the North and Middle districts of the Jordan Valley by renovating the existing pipes, renewing pump stations, and thus enhancing the capacity of reservoirs. It is expected that 137,000 persons in the area will benefit from this project. The daily per capita consumption is expected to increase from 80 liters to 103 liters in one hand, and the water leakage ratio is to decrease from 30% to 20% on the other at the time of implementation of the project.

Japan has extended financial and technical assistance mainly in the field of developing water resources and reducing Non-Revenue Water. This assistance has been made through Japan’s firm recognition that stable and continuous water supply is imperative to the promotion of industrial, agricultural, social and other activities. (Please see attached supplemental information of Japan’s assistance in the water sector)

In his remarks at the ceremony, His Excellency Mr. Kato expressed his hope that this project would lay a foundation in improving the living standard and industrial activities in the Jordan Valley area, and accelerate mutual understanding and friendship between Jordan and Japan. He also assured that the Government of Japan would continue to work with the Government of Jordan in supporting Jordanian people who are facing difficulties in their lives.
