The handing-over ceremony of the project for developing Jordan Civil Defense equipment was held on April 27, 2006 in Amman. The ceremony was attended by H.E. Mr. Eid Al Fayez, Minister of Interior, H.E. Major General Awad Al-Masae’d, Director General of Civil Defense, H.E. Mr. Shigenobu Kato, Ambassador of Japan, and other government officials.
In recent years, it has been observed in Jordan that there has been an increasing in the number of emergency calls requesting rescue operations for its civil defense authorities. On occasion, swift and prompt emergency operations have been hindered by difficulties such as a delay in the replacement of authorities’ timeworn equipment. Enhancing the capability of the fire-fighting and emergency medical service sector of Jordan, therefore, is in urgent need.
In this regard, the Government of Japan has extended a grant worth 973 million Japanese Yen (approximately US$ 8.3 million) for the procurement of fire engines, ambulances, and other appliances in eight target governorates, namely Ma’an, Karak, Aqaba, Tafieleh, Mafraq, Irbid, Jerash and Ajloun. The Government of Japan certainly appreciates that the fire-fighting and emergency medical services form an essential administrative function in the social and economic development in the country, particularly since these serve to protect people’s lives and properties from disasters and the accidents.
The project is aimed to enable the Government of Jordan to provide timely and reliable services, and further contribute to the reduction of the damage and casualties caused by disasters and accidents.
The Government of Japan extended the support in the field of fire-fighting and emergency medical service in Jordan in 1997 by granting 667 million Japanese Yen (approximately US$ 5.7 million) for the Greater Amman, and the Governorates of Madaba, Zarqa and Balqa through the Grant Aid to purchase the necessary equipment.
