The Government of Japan has decided to extend food aid, amounting to 500 million yen (around 4.7 million US Dollars), to Palestinian refugees through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). An agreement for this aid was signed on March 17, 2006 between Mr. Matahiro Yamaguchi, Charge d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy of Japan to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and Mrs. Karen Koning Abuzayd, Commissioner-General of UNRWA.
UNRWA has explained that the Palestinian economy has been seriously damaged since September 2000, and accordingly the number of Palestinian refugee families categorized as the Special Hardship Case is increasing year by year.
Taking into consideration the serious situation, the Government of Japan has decided to extend the aid for purchasing wheat flour and pulses.
Japan has provided food aid for Palestinian Refugees through UNRWA since 1970.
