The Handing-over ceremony of four used garbage collection vehicles to Ma’an Municipality was held on January 19, 2006 in Ma’an.  The Ceremony was attended by H.E. Mr. Koichi Obata, Ambassador of Japan, H.E. Mr. Nader Thherat, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Eng. Khaled Maani, Mayor of Ma’an Municipality.

110 tons of garbage and other wastes come from domestic sectors daily in Ma’an Municipality.  Moreover, the quantity of garbage is expected to increase since the Municipality is expanding horizontally to include major sites like
Al-Hussein University and Industrial Estate.  Having recognized these situations, the Japanese Government decided to donate four used garbage collection vehicles.  These vehicles enable the Municipality to expand the collection area of garbage which is currently limited only 35 square kilometers in the whole Municipality.

In remarks at the ceremony, Mr. Obata said “I’m sure that this donation will contribute to the preservation of environment from hazards and threats of waste as well as the improvement of the waste management in the Municipality.”

This grant is the first case provided by Recycled Goods Provision, one of the frameworks of the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GAGP). Under the scheme, fire engines, ambulances, garbage collection vehicles are provided as second hand from Japan for humanitarian and local development projects in the world.
