Go Nagai
Go Nagai is a Japanese manga artist, particularly prolific in the fields of science fiction and fantasy. He was born on September 6, 1945, in Wajima (Ishikawa Prefecture), but was raised in Tōkyō.
He made his debut in 1968 with the short story “Meakashi porikichi” (Polikichi the Detective) in “Bokura” magazine (published by Kōdansha), and soon became a top hit manga artist. In 1969 he established Dynamic Productions, as a managing company also involved in planning and ideating new projects for animation, live action movies and other genres.
In 1972 he released the first adventure of “Mazinger Z” in “Weekly Shōnen Jump”. It was the first giant robot controlled by a man sitting inside its body, thus creating the prolific robot genre which is still today the trademark of Japanese animation.
The robot saga continued with “Great Mazinger” and “UFO Robot Grendizer”, while successful spin-offs such as “Getter Robot” and “Steel Armor Jeeg” were created by him and drawn by his colleagues at Dynamic Productions.
In 1980, he was awarded the 4th Kodansha Manga Award for the Sci-Fi manga “Susano-oh”.
His animated works have been the first Japanese TV shows to be broadcast in many foreign countries, with “Mazinger Z” becoming a hit in Asia, Spain, South America and North Africa and “Grendizer” in Canada, France, Italy, Russia and the Middle East. He is currently working at a new chapter of his robot tale, titled “Mazinsaga”.
