Working towards promoting the exchange of people and culture in order to foster mutual understanding between the Japanese and Jordanian people, particularly among women in both countries, the Government of Japan sent three Japanese women leaders to Jordan on Saturday 7 November for a two-day working visit as part of the Japan-Jordan Women’s Exchange Program for this year which celebrates its 24th year.

 

Dr. Tomoko Kusama, the Japanese Nursing Association’s Vice President, along with its Executive Member Ms. Kyoko Nagaike, and Vice President of the National Women’s Committee of UN NGOs in Japan, Ms. Masako Hiramatsu, participated in the program which was organized by the Embassy of Japan in Jordan in cooperation with the General Federation of Jordanian Women (GFJW).

 

They held several meetings and discussions under the theme “Peoples Health and Women's Role", with a number of Jordanian women leaders representing the Jordanian Nursing Council, the Mother and Child Health Directorate at the Ministry of Health and the Jordanian Association for Family Planning and Protection.
 

The three delegates, on Saturday 7 November, took part in a workshop held at the GFJW’s premises where they presented the following papers: “Process to Nursing Profession” by Dr. Kusama, “Building Workplace where Women are Able to Continue Working” by Ms. Nagaike and “Work life Balance and Women” by Ms. Hiramatsu.

 

On Sunday 8 November, they met with Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal, H.E. Mrs. Hala Latouf, Minister of Social Development and H.E. Senator Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Secretary General of the National Council for Family Affairs. Moreover, the delegation visited Princess Mona Nursing College and the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Jordan.

 

Proposed by the initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal during her visit to Japan in 1993, and launched officially in 1996, the Japan-Jordan Women’s Exchange Program has been taken place annually, allowing both Jordanian and Japanese women the opportunity to compare and share experiences on vaious issues concerning women in both countries. This program has grown to include Egypt in 1998 and the Palestinian Authority in 2000.

It is worth mentioning that throughout the past thirteen years; the Government of Japan has been financing in dispatching and receiving women leaders between Japan and Jordan every year, leading the way for fruitful exchange of experiences on issues of common interest with the aim of improving women's status.

 

Themes of past programs included: Women doctors and leadership, Women's participation in economy, women and peace, women and education and women and law.
