The Embassy of Japan, in cooperation with the Cultural Department
of the Greater Amman Municipality and the Japan Foundation, a semi-governmental
organization of Japan for promoting cultural exchange, will inaugurate a
photography exhibition entitled “Gazing at the Contemporary World: Japanese
Photography from the 1970s to the Present " on Tuesday, 10 February, at the City
Hall of the Greater Amman Municipality at 6:00pm. The event will run through 24
February.
The exhibition, part of the Japan Foundation’s visual arts program to enhance
the understanding of Japanese arts and culture, features 76 photographs by 23
internationally renowned Japanese photographers and explores the diverse
photographic expression that has emerged in Japan since the 1970s.
The show is composed of two sections. The first, “A Changing Society”, focuses
on human beings as members of society, while the second, “Changing Landscapes”,
looks at cities, the suburbs, and nature.
Through these photographs’ unique views of society and landscapes, viewers will
gain a better understanding of the myriad changes that took place in Japan
between the period of rapid economic growth, the bubble economy that emerged in
the late 1980s and the long economic stagnation in the 1990s, the development of
a high-level consumer culture, the information revolution, the growing
concentration of population in cities and the loss of traditional communities in
the early 21st century.
It is worth mentioning that this year will mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Jordan.
