Quick glance at the event

The Embassy of Japan in Jordan in cooperation with Jordan Applied University (JAU) College of Hospitality & Tourism Education organized the Japanese food demonstration to members of Ikebana International Jordan Chapter within activities on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary. Mr. Mitsuhiro Hikasa, Chef to the Ambassador of Japan, introduced his techniques for preparing the authentic Japanese food at the event, which took place at the JAU on 20 February 2008 in the presence of Mr. Shigenobu Kato, Ambassador of Japan, and Professor Muhsen Makhamreh, Dean of JAU. Over eighty members of Ikebana enjoyed the chef’s refined culinary techniques, which deserves to be called art.

Introducing both Japanese cuisine and Ikebana, Japanese art of flower arrangement, attach importance to retaining its work of art as much of natural taste of its ingredients or materials as possible, as well as the delicacy of colour, shape and seasonality, Ambassador Shigenobu Kato mentioned in his speech that the demonstration would further enrich knowledge of the members on the Japanese culture from a different perspective. He also expressed his gratitude to the Ikebana artists in Jordan for their continuous efforts for the further mutual understanding between Japan and Jordan through promotion of Ikebana over the last two decades. Ikebana International Jordan Chapter recently received two commendations, from the Foreign Minister of Japan in November and Ikebana International head quarters in Japan February respectively.

Chef Hikasa presented the preparation of grilled salmon, tempura (fried food), and sushi-roll, which incorporated with all locally available ingredients.

Having enhanced its reputation as a healthy food and its refined presentation, the Japanese cuisine has become very popular in Amman, in which over ten restaurants dedicated to the Japanese food run, as well as many hotels and other restaurants in Jordan offer Japanese style of food as part of their menu or buffet. The Embassy of Japan and JAU jointly organized the Japanese food demonstration to professional chefs in March 2007 in order to improve and develop the Japanese food in Jordan.
