The 22nd Japan-Jordan Women’s Exchange Program

Working towards promoting the exchange of people and culture in order to foster mutual understanding between the Jordanian and Japanese people, particularly among women in both countries, three Japanese women doctors, representing Japan Medical Women’s Association, will arrive in Amman on Saturday 1 November for a two-day working visit as part of the Japan-Jordan Women’s Exchange Program for this year which marks the 22nd annual meeting.

Dr. Atsuko Heshiki, President of Medical Women's International Association and the Japan Medical Women’s Association’s ex-President along with its present Chair Dr. Yasuko Oda and Vice President Dr. Takako Tsuda, will participate in the program which is organized by the Embassy of Japan in Jordan in cooperation with the General Federation of Jordanian Women (GFJW). They will hold several meetings and discussions with a number of Jordanian women doctors under the theme “Achievement of Leadership and its Results through the Experiences as Doctors”.

The three delegates will, on Saturday, take part in a workshop to be held at the GFJW’s premises where they will present the following papers: “Status of Medical Women in Academia and Enhancing Leadership Opportunities” by Dr. Heshiki, “School Education in Japan” by Dr. Oda and “Leadership in Women’s Education of Health Science: The Role of Japan Medical Women’s Association” by Dr. Tsuda.

Moreover, they are expected to meet with Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal on Sunday and visit the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Jordan, the Directorate of Maternity and Childhood Services at the Ministry of Health as well as Amman National School as an example of an educational institution which is managed by a female leadership.

Proposed by the initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal during her visit to Japan in 1993, and launched officially in 1996, the Japan-Jordan Women’s Exchange Program has been taken place yearly, allowing both Jordanian and Japanese women the opportunity to compare and share experiences on various issues concerning women in both countries. This program has grown to include Egypt in 1998 and Palestine in 2000.

The Program is organized by the Embassy of Japan in Jordan in cooperation with the General Federation of Jordanian Women and is sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Japanese delegation visits Jordan in autumn while Jordanian women visit Japan in winter.

Themes of past programs included: Women and the environment, Women's participation in the economic activity, women and peace, Women and Social Education and women and law.
