Quick glance at the project

1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a grant aid for conflict prevention and peace building of 1.897 billion yen (about 17 million US dollar) to the Republic of Iraq to the Project for Establishment of a Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Fallujah. 2. The Maternity and Children’s Hospital of Fallujah will be converted from the existing General Hospital when the new building for the General Hospital is completed in June 2008. Currently, the Hospital is the solo regional core medical center for maternal and pediatric health services with 7,000 births and 1,200 cases of C-section operations per year. The project aims to establish the Maternity and Children’s Hospital with renovated facilities and equipment and sufficient capacity to provide full-fledged medical services in maternity, reproductive and pediatric health care. Five hundred thousand mothers and children in Fallujah and surrounding areas will benefit from the improved access to and medical services at the Hospital.

3. The Government of Japan has provided humanitarian, recovery and development assistance to Iraq. Among the many sectors Japan is involved with, the medical and health sector is one of the most important pillars, with direct assistance to Iraq in this sector totaling about 23 million US dollars and assistance through international organization of 5 million US dollars.
